My kids loved this easy water play idea with tin foil. With summer days here, I’m looking for any excuse to find ways to cool off.
Summer is the perfect time to experiment with different types of water play. Pouring, scooping, and splashing, it’s all part of the fun!
Simple Summer Tin Foil Water Play for Kids
Try this simple water play activity, and watch what your kids create!

For this activity you’ll need:
- bowls
- funnels
- jug of water
- tin foil
Get Ready for Tin Foil Water Play!
We set up our water play activity in the backyard. A few beach towels on the grass helped my kids to get comfy.
To set up, I poured water into a large bowl and set out the jars, funnels, and tin foil. Seriously: that’s it.
Tin foil can be hard to manipulate into anything other than a ball. So I showed them how to crunch the tin foil into shapes and spirals.
The kids took it from there, transferring water to their own cups and containers.

They experimented with using the tin foil in all sorts of interesting ways.
First, they coiled up tin foil inside a jar as a spiral ramp.
Tin foil used as slides hooked to the sides of a big bowl. This one was super fun since it mimicked water slides!
We also made little tin boats that we floated in the bowl of water. This is a great opportunity to talk about sinking and floating!
We loved the interesting sound that the water made when we poured it over the tin foil! This water play idea offers tons of fun sensory input.
Crunching the tin foil, listening to the water dripping, and splashing in the bowls. It’s such an easy sensory play activity, too!
We also love making nature soup!
They also loved using the funnels to drop the water from a distance and pouring water from different containers. There are so many options for open-ended play with this activity!
